Titans Clashed Here
The movie Clash of the Titans was a remake of the 1980s mythology and was partly filmed in Tenerife. In the movie, the opening scene showed a towering statue of Zeus topple into the sea at Agros. It was actually filmed in Tenerifes national park at volcanic Mount Teide.
Tenerife Used to Have Pyramids
Egypt is famous for their great pyramids and admittedly, Tenerife never had pyramids that were visible and imposing as the ones in Egypt. There is evidence to suggest that civilization called the Guanche lived on Tenerife before Spain conquered the island and built pyramids..
Nelson Lost His Arm Battling the Spanish
In 1797, the great Battle of Santa Cruz saw Rear Admiral Nelson repelled three times by the Spanish on the island. His right arm was ruined because of a musket ball shot, and he lost half of the limb in amputation later in surgery.
Tenerife Secretly Has Scottish Heritage
The patron saint of Scotland is Saint Andrew, but the apostle who travelled far and wide made it all the way to Tenerife to preach the word of God. The saltire cross was Saint Andrews symbol and it was adopted by Tenerife for their flag, along with Scotland and the Russian navy.
Shakespeare Loved Tenerifes Local Wine
The Bard often made reference to the Malmsey wine of Tenerife, describing it as an absolutely penetrating wine in Henry IV. It was believed that Shakespeare gave Malmsey wine on an annual basis in part payment for his services as a playwright in London.
