A passport is an important document that is issued to an interested civilian by his or her native government. It consists of an official photograph of said civilian, their date of birth and full name and it allows the holder to travel internationally. The document essentially entitles the traveler to re-enter their original country and is difficult to obtain. For these two reasons, it is important to quickly replace a lost passports the moment that you notice it is gone.
Just like it is when misplacing a wallet or bag, losing an expedited new U.S. passport can be an extremely frightening and vulnerable experience. After you find that it’s missing, give yourself a few minutes or so to carefully look for it. Reporting it lost means that it’ll be permanently invalidated through the Department of State so it is important to first be sure that it is actually missing rather than lost among your belongings.
If the passport can’t be located, you should quickly obtain an official form called a DS-64 to report it stolen or misplaced. Once the papers have been properly filed, the missing document will be made invalid by the State. If it’s eventually recovered or located, the document won’t be able to be used for any type of travel and should be quickly and properly destroyed.
The DS-sixty four form has to be completed and turned in to the traveler’s local consulate or Department of State. If you choose to mail the papers, do so using certified mail so you will be notified when they reach their destination. That way, you’ll have a general idea of when you can start the next stage of the process.
Look on the Department of State’s official website for a list of locations that accept and process passport applications. In most cases, it is simply your neighborhood post office. Once you have received word that your DS-64 form has been processed, visit one of these locations and begin the process of applying for a new passport.
The paperwork required for this stage is called the DS-eleven and should be properly filled out with the correct info. The rest of the process should be familiar to you since you’ve already been through it once already.
If your travel document was lost or stolen during a trip overseas, things can be tricky since it is impossible to re-enter your native country without the proper international identification. Locate the nearest United States Embassy and head there right away. American Representatives there will be able to help you and will assist you in your quest to get home.
You will need to provide the embassy unit with an itinerary of your travels and the date you plan on returning to your home. They will help you fill out the proper paperwork that will lead to being able to replace a lost United States passport. You most likely will not arrive back home the day that you planned to but the embassy will make sure that you get there as quickly as possible with an expedited new US passport.
