The Etiquette Of Dress On A Cruise

August 18th, 2010

Cruises are becoming more common and more accessible for most people. Taking the very best parts of society, art, culture, food and entertainment and placing them on a floating city is an accurate representation of a modern cruise. If youre about to embark on your first cruise there are a few things that you should keep in mind.

Most still enjoy the connotations of luxury associated with a cruise and most ships still expect a certain level of decorum once onboard. Whether youve found yourself a fantastic deal on a 5 star cruise for a fortnight or youre just spending a few nights staying closer to home there are a few things to remember. Once your ticket is confirmed youll be told whats going to be happening onboard and what dress code is expected should you wish to attend. If the evening activities require a formal dress code it is best to adhere to it. Although youre likely to get at least one person argue that theyve paid their money are entitled to dress like Homer Simpson if they so choose, the majority of people in the room will have paid to enjoy a certain air of class that one expects on a cruise. It is not just on ship that you should think about your appearance. You must also consider the customs and tradition in any countries youre visiting on your luxury cruise. Many religious countries will require you be covered up if entering places of worship. Ignoring these customs could quite easily ruin your holiday not to mention get you in serious trouble. Youll also need to be mindful of any slogans you have printed on your clothes. You could be visiting several countries whos cultures youre unfamiliar with so always take the advice given on the ship. They way you dress might also draw unwanted attention by advertising the fact youre a tourist.

Whether youre cruising around the exotic Caribbean islands or youve indulged in a river cruise down the Danube, you will also be expected to show the same common courtesy in your behaviour too. As beautiful as your floating hotel is, it will soon become very small if you find your neighbours intolerable. Some people may prefer to get up early whilst on holiday to ensure theyre able to enjoy as much of their time as possible. At the same time some prefer to stay up late enjoying themselves and sleep in the next day. If either of these sounds likes you, try not to be too loud especially if your neighbour prefers the opposite approach to their holidays.

What Kind Of People Go On Oceania Cruises?

August 10th, 2010

Being a photographer on various cruise boats for several years, I managed to meet a great variety of people. I would say that being in a boat for 2 or more weeks generates some very different dynamics compared to the time we spend on the ground. New friendships can be developed, new love stories can take place, couples can divorce, babies may be conceived or even born and some may even pass away!

Any of those massive luxurious boats that cross the oceans are in a sense like small towns. One factor many people overlook at is the fact that on board there arent just passengers and holiday-makers but also members of staff that have to stay on the boat for long periods of time. Although this is against the regulations, there is a lot of social interaction between the members of stuff and the clients.

The most typical profile a passenger is that he is around 60 years old, retired and wealthy. Although they all belong to different professions and educational backgrounds, the bottom line is that the vast majority of them are very successful in their fields. Apart from the expected diplomats, lawyers, architects, doctors and highly credited professionals its common to come across shop keepers, vendors and many small scale businessmen. That signifies that high education is not really one of the main factors, although a high income is.

Of course there is a small part of passengers who although they dont make enough to be afford a luxury, they are happy saving hard in order to make their dream come true cruise. Some of them simply want to experience a different lifestyle which differs from their daily one greatly. Although I had that experience on Silversea Cruises boats where I worked, other colleagues that used to work on Oceania Cruises and Cunard Cruises have had similar experiences.

When it comes to sports, golf is definitely the number one while cricket and polo are also popular. Taking up a luxury cruise for many people could be a once in a lifetime experience but it is definitely worth it..

Why people love/hate luxury cruises

July 18th, 2010

Luxury cruises have definitely many lovers as well as others who just hate them. Those who hate them though, most of the time havent even tried and they are rather biased. Because the industry was created and reached its heyday during the first half of the twentieth century that doesnt mean that they belong to the past. Some of the big names included the Titanic, which was sunk in 1912, the Britannic which was sunk in Greece in 1916 and so many more. Some of the biggest and most luxurious boats ended peoples lives in a tragic way and this is why people are still talking about them.

The unsinkable Titanic with all its luxury and greatness has definitely had an impact on many people, especially those who watched the blockbuster films which were depicting the whole story. My relatives who had immigrated to the United States were visiting us in England almost every summer, always in a cruise as they didnt want to risk getting in a plane. I still remember them telling me about the fun and excitement they were having on board on their way from New York to Southampton.

The romance, is a large part of the reason that luxury cruises appeal to so many people. Hollywood with all those romance films shot on luxurious cruise boats has definitely contributed to the myth. I was never realistic about participating in any of those five star cruises my relatives were talking about. They seemed so happy each time they were talking about those unforgettable Silver Sea cruises or about those Oceania cruises that it became one of my dreams into the childs mind.

After I actually tried a luxury cruise with the whole family I completely changed my mind about them and a value them really high. I definitely recommend it to all open minded people and those who like having their own experience before making any judgments.
